Yet in his debut premier-class season, Diogo Moreira has shown that he belongs on the MotoGP grid—and has made a strong case as the standout rookie of the year.
The reigning Moto2 World Champion arrived in MotoGP with high expectations after becoming the first Brazilian to win a Grand Prix world championship. Riding for LCR Honda, Moreira has embraced the challenge of learning the premier class while helping Honda continue its rebuilding process.
Adapting Faster Than Expected
Moving from Moto2 to MotoGP is never easy, particularly when joining a manufacturer that is still working to close the gap to the front-running teams.
Despite that challenge, Moreira has consistently demonstrated steady progress. Rather than chasing spectacular results at the expense of consistency, he has focused on understanding the RC213V, improving his pace, and gaining valuable experience each race weekend. That measured approach has allowed him to score points and steadily improve his competitiveness.
Building on a Championship Foundation
Moreira didn’t arrive in MotoGP as an unproven prospect. His rise through the Grand Prix ranks has been built on consistent success.
He was named Moto3 Rookie of the Year in 2022 before moving to Moto2, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2024. In 2025, he completed a remarkable comeback to capture the Moto2 World Championship, becoming the first Brazilian rider to win a world title in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
Those accomplishments provided the confidence and experience needed to make the jump to MotoGP.
Learning From the Best
One of Moreira’s biggest strengths has been his willingness to learn from veteran riders.
He has spoken about studying experienced competitors, including Marc Márquez, to better understand racecraft, braking techniques, and how to maximize performance on a MotoGP bike. That openness to learning has accelerated his development during his rookie campaign.
